So . . . I started a new job the day before Valentine’s Day. My previous job was one mile from my house. My new commute is 16 miles. I have decided to make the best of it by learning on the way.
Since I started my new job I have taken 14 Lynda courses. I took two of them at home because I had to work hands-on and needed two screens. The other 12 were a knowledge transfer situation (watch and learn/listen and learn).
The most recent one was short but oh so full of amazingness.
Ken Blanchard on Servant Leadership
This man is the father of Servant Leadership. Well, not exactly. Robert Greenleaf coined the term in the 70’s, but Kenneth Blanchard has expanded it and brought it to the masses. I first heard of this concept, servant leadership, when I was working on my M.B.A. at Lake Forest Graduate School of Management.
In this course, Ken Blanchard name checks Nordstrom. Chick-Fil-A, Alfred Nobel and Socrates.
He says the big question is “Are you here to serve or be served?” I would venture to say that most managers are there to be served. They may not be conscious of it, but their actions broadcast the truth.
His most recent book which I very badly want to read now is called Servant Leadership in Action. It’s about what Servant Leadership looks like in the real world.
He is also well known as the author of One Minute Manager, a certified business classic.

Since I started doing this, Lynda has transitioned to “LinkedIn Learning”.
If you can, I would recommend accessing Lynda/LinkedIn Learning through your local library.
My local library offers free access to anyone with a library card. Check with your local library to see if they offer this awesome benefit.
