Prince2Me

I would like to acknowledge and spotlight what the Prince Estate is doing over at Prince2Me.

While the main Prince site is a bit difficult to navigate and interact with their Prince2Me page is a fun way for fans to share what Prince means to them.

I tried it out and this is my Prince2Me post (see the original in all its glory)

They limit you to 5 pieces, so each word or photo or gif (that image on the bottom right corner is a gif on my post on their page) counts as a piece, so you have to be short and sweet. I wanted to say “symbol of a generation” but then I could only have one other piece.

While limited, I appreciate the idea and the implementation. It’s fun to look though what other people from around the world have come up with. Before I tried it, I did not understand that it was a closed system, meaning you cannot add your own pieces; you have to choose from what they give you. It’s one way to keep user-generated content from getting out of control a la Jeremy Renner. Hey, if you want to post a super-creative unique remembrance/tribute to Prince, that’s what personal websites are for, amiright?

I discovered Prince.org, an independent fan-created site that is basically an old-school forum where people can talk amongst themselves as well as stay up-to-date on what’s going on in the Prince Universe. Guess what? There is a lot going on!

On day 5 of round 2 of #100DaysOfCode . . .

. . . and here is my blathering so far: 2nd Round of #100DaysOfCode. I’m using bitbucket for the first time and I put my #100DaysOfCode log.md file inside my repo for my ‘Book Reports” where I am drafting my posts about the books I am reading.

So I am learning:

  • how to use Bitbucket
  • how to use Markdown (more)
  • WordPress (via Skillcrush and Udemy)
  • whatever is in these books I am reading (!)

Remote: Office Not Required, by David Heinemeier Hansson & Jason Fried.

I’m at the part called “Dealing with Excuses” where the authors trot out the excuses companies make for not going remote, and they ring true–I have heard them all. They all boil down to a lack of trust and with that, fear.

Some bits that really stand out as answers to familiar refrains:

False equality benefits nobody.

Why force everyone in the organization to work the same way?  [. . .] Different jobs, different requirements. People get that.

If people really want to play video games or surf the web all day, they’re perfectly capable of doing so from their desks at the office.

Big businesses love to look at what each other is doing too. But if you hide in the herd, you’re not likely to get ahead of the pack.

I’m looking forward to the next section, “How to Collaborate Remotely”. My boyfriend’s department recently went 100% remote after a reduction in force made their office space obsolete. They have had some bumpy days these past two weeks and I’m interested to see if anything in the next section would be helpful advice for them.

First 2 weeks in Colt Steele’s Udemy Course

(I started this post after one week but let it sit for a week . . .so now I am up to lecture 57, 18 % complete, booyah! )

So I have indeed learned some new things my first week in Colt Steele’s Web Developer Bootcamp Udemy course (first 4 units), as I thought I might.

First of all, I have learned some cool Sublime shortcuts. In my first Udemy coding course, the teacher was typing so fast and things would sometimes just appear on the screen, but he never told us how he did it. Now I know and can be at least half as fast and do not have to pause and rewind so often.

I also learned about multiple cursors. No more cut-and-paste ad nauseum. It’s the little things!  Oh and command-slash to comment out the easy way.  And command-shift-D to copy what you just typed infinitum. Also the lorem-tab shortcut. Splendid.

I have been hopping back and forth between Sublime, Atom, Brackets, Visual Studio Code, but for the time being I am kinda locked in to Sublime because that is what he is using and I am really liking the time-saving shortcuts. Now all I have to do is make sure my packages and user settings are synchronized between my two computers. Going to a Sublime installation that does not have my settings is a sobering experience. Gotta do everything by hand again. Bleh!

The other new thing I learned is forms. I won’t say I haven’t been taught forms before. I did learn about forms last year in a Coursera course, but I didn’t get it. I tried so hard on the assignment to recreate what they wanted and it was never right. This time I got it and was able to recreate everything. There were a couple things I missed, like my placeholder text was slightly off, but I got the concept; I just didn’t read the placeholder closely enough.

I understand tables better too.

In a CSS uint I have learned the word ‘octathorp‘. I bet you have no clue what that means. (I sure didn’t.) Look it up.

He makes heavy use of the Mozilla Developer Network pages (MDN) and encourages us to do the same. I had glanced at them once or twice before but I had no idea the depth to which they go and how useful they can be.

I’ve been peeping the gitter rooms for the course and it is indeed amazing how many new people start this course everyday. I intend to be one of the many who finish it as well. (A lot of helpful people in the gitter rooms as well which is great. Just as good as the FreeCodeCamp and Odin gitters.)

On a side note, I found my next challenge for after #100DaysOfCode. I mean I could just do #301DaysOfCode or a redux of #100DaysOfCode but as I intend to be looking for a job as a scrum master at that time I won’t do that. I think I’m going to start the 100 Day Deep Work Challenge to really focus on building something or learning something (like Kanban mastery or a deep dive into Agile and/or Scrum).  I will save that for another post, but to read more about it you can check out James Willet’s blog.

Decided on my next learning spot to continue my #100DaysOfCode

There are some overlaps with things I already know, but I’m of the opinion that repetition helps cement learning and also there are new things to discover. In the beginning, I will be coasting along for the most part, but in my experience when you learn from different sources, there is always something you didn’t learn from the other sources.

In this course, it looks like I will be learning MORE Javascript which is totally in line with what I want to do.

I’m also going to be forking the project I made in my previous course to  play around with it and make something different that is totally my own and is about something I am interested in.
